Nitrous Oxide Gas and Local Anesthesia

  • Nitrous oxide gas is administered to produce a relaxed but awake state.
  • Numbing injections are then given.
  • Please take all prescription medications as normal.
  • It is not necessary to change your eating habits before your appointment unless instructed otherwise.

Intravenous Anesthesia

  • IV medications are given to produce a semiconscious or unconscious condition. You will receive oxygen, and IV and sometimes nitrous oxide gas.
  • The numbing injections in surgery are given when you are asleep.
  • No solid food for 8 hours prior to surgery.
  • Clear liquids are permitted up to two hours prior to surgery.
  • Take any prescription medications with a sip of water, unless otherwise decided during consultation with Dr. Cowan.
  • You MUST have a responsible adult bring you to the appointment. They MUST remain in the office during your procedure and drive you home after your surgery. It is recommended that they stay with you for the remainder of the day.
  • Please do not wear contact lenses. Remove them and wear your glasses to your appointment.

Oral Sedation

You may be given medication to relax you prior to your procedure. It will be given to you at your consultation appointment. It is called Halcion. Please take it 45 minutes to one hour before your procedure. Someone MUST drive you to your appointment and drive you home. You cannot drive after taking this medication.
